Last week week, we welcomed award-winning journalist Rosemary Reynolds, who shared insights from her book Trapped in the System, based on the true story of the
killing of Rainier Police Chief Ralph Painter. Drawing from her years covering the case, Rosemary focused on the complex story of the shooter, Daniel Butts, including
his struggles with addiction, mental illness, and a system that failed to intervene before tragedy occurred. She walked us through the long legal process that followed,
one of the longest untried cases in Oregon history, ending with a plea deal in 2019. Rosemary also highlighted current Oregon legislation aimed at addressing mental
health care, addiction treatment, and prevention, emphasizing the urgent need for more resources and stronger advocacy. Her presentation was thought-provoking
and deeply moving, reminding us of the human impact behind the headlines. Proceeds from her book continue to support students in Rainier, helping to create
brighter opportunities for the next generation.
